Mindy Shelton, Assistant Principal
My name is Mindy Shelton and I am the new Assistant Principal for 2016-17. I’m excited to be joining the Central community and have heard great things about the students, staff and families at the school. I’m looking forward to getting to know you and working together to make Central a great place for students to learn and grow.
I began teaching at Central Elementary School in Belmont in 1995. I taught kindergarten and then moved into fifth grade where I stayed for 10 years before moving to fifth grade at Nesbit School, also in Belmont. Nesbit had been struggling at the time so we formed a leadership team of staff and parents and developed an improvement plan that focused on academic intervention, school climate and parent engagement. Out of that came a new role called School Climate Facilitator, which I was excited to take on. For four years, I worked with the Nesbit Community to build a character education program, teach conflict resolution skills, engage families, and build consensus among staff.
In 2010, the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District received a Healthy Schools Initiative Grant from the Sequoia Healthcare District, (the same grant San Carlos receives) and the Superintendent asked me to take my school climate work district-wide. Over the last six years, I have worked to implement and improve health & wellness programs such as health education, PE, social-emotional learning and Safe Routes to School. I was also a part of the strategic planning process and helped lead a team of district stakeholders through the process of instilling a growth mindset, creating a collaborative culture of learning, and promoting a capacity for innovation. All of my experiences will carry over into my role at Central perfectly.
My husband Jeff and I live in Redwood Shores and have two boys. My older son just completed 8th grade at Ralston Middle School so I also understand the unique joys and challenges of middle school first hand. I look forward to supporting our students, staff and families through those joys and challenges and getting to know all of you. Please stop by and say hello and let me know if there’s anything I can do to help make your time at Central Middle School the best it can be.
